Malaria is one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases, listed by the World Health Organization as one of the three major public health issues facing the world today, along with AIDS and tuberculosis. Especially dangerous types of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, such as cerebral malaria in children, result in about a million deaths globally each year. In recent years, resistance to artemisinin derivatives, which are effective drugs for treating severe malaria, has emerged, posing a significant crisis where humanity's last line of defense against this disease may be completely breached. Through genomic bioinformatics analysis, an "extra" member was found in the exosome complex-like protein of Plasmodium falciparum—PfRNaseII. By using transgenic and RNA sequencing techniques, it was discovered that the target of regulation for the PfRNaseII molecule is the A-var gene: when the function of the PfRNaseII protein is defective, The A_var gene is activated from 'sleep', while other subtypes of var genes are not affected.
