WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project Officially Launched in Shanghai

On the afternoon of November 5, thelaunching ceremony of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) GREENCity Acceleration Project took place at the Green Technology Bank headquartersin Hongkou District, Shanghai. The event featured speeches by Edward Kwakwa,WIPO Assistant Director General, XIE Wenlan, Deputy Director of ShanghaiScience and Technology Commission, and YU Chen, Deputy Directo of Shanghai IntellectualProperty Administration, who jointly inaugurated the project. ZHANG Renhe, anacademician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a keynote addresstitled “The Crisis of Climate Warming and Responses”.

WIPO GREEN is the United Nations' largestgreen technology platform. Established in 2013, it facilitates collaborationbetween green technology providers and seekers worldwide. China, a leader ingreen technology, has contributed over 9,500 green, low-carbon, andenvironmentally friendly technologies to the WIPO GREEN database, representingabout 7% of the platform’s total. To further advance the adoption and growth ofgreen technologies, WIPO GREEN has launched city acceleration projects incities globally. These initiatives, driven by urban demand for sustainabletechnologies, promote the deployment of innovative solutions worldwide andfoster international cooperation. This approach infuses fresh momentum intocities’ green transformation. Since May this year, with the support of theShanghai Science and Technology Commission and the Shanghai IntellectualProperty Administration, the Green Technology Bank, in partnership with theChina National Eastern Tech-transfer Center, the Shanghai Technology Exchange,and other specialized service organizations, has launched the WIPO GREEN CityAcceleration Project in Shanghai. This initiative marks a significant stepforward for Shanghai in green technology application and internationalcooperation.

At the event, Green Technology Bank unveiledthe Activity Program for WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project in Shanghai.The focus will be on key areas such as new energy, environmental protection,circular economy, and carbon neutrality, advancing the adoption and applicationof green technologies through six targeted initiatives. These include hostinga Green Technology Innovation Challenge, initiating a Green Technology Express,launching a Green Technology Acceleration Camp, implementing a Green Finance EmpowermentAction, promoting model demonstration projects, and establishing a Low-CarbonPatent Pool. The partners will work together to leverage the globalplatform of WIPO GREEN, harness Shanghai’s strengths in scientific innovation,and capitalize on the unique advantages of the Yangtze River Delta region. Byinnovating operational mechanisms and service models, the initiative aims toshowcase Shanghai’s technological achievements and solutions on a global stagewhile connecting international and domestic green technology supply-and-demandplatforms. The effort seeks to establish Shanghai as a hub for green technologyexchange, expand its network of green innovation collaborators, and create an“accelerator” for green technology commercialization, facilitating the seamlessintroduction of green technologies to China and their promotion to the globalmarket.

During the event, the National EasternTech-transfer Centershowcased the Innomatch platform and its potentialto enhance the efficiency of connecting green technology providers withseekers. Additionally, the Green Technology Bank and the Shanghai TechnologyExchange signed a cooperation agreement to jointly establish a green andlow-carbon patent pool. Representatives from Shanghai Huayi EnvironmentalProtection Technology Co., Ltd., Fudan University, and East China NormalUniversity shared their green technology needs and achievements. Participatinggreen technology managers expressed their enthusiasm to actively facilitatesolution matching and explore new application scenarios for these innovations.Moving forward, efforts will focus on aligning technological solutions withspecific demands and accelerating their integration and application withinurban settings. Additionally, a representative from the Shanghai InternationalCollege of Intellectual Property at Tongji University outlined how talentdevelopment and think tank initiatives will play a pivotal role in advancingthe WIPO GREEN City Acceleration Project.
