In the marine coatings market in China, the overall demand for ship coatings is growing at an average annual rate of over 20%. Against the backdrop of the intensified trend towards protecting the marine ecological environment, the research and development of new non-toxic efficient marine antifouling coatings to replace the toxic and harmful antifouling products has become a hotspot over which the international coating and marine community shares its common concern. The new antifouling coatings formulated by incorporating nanoparticles as antifouling agents do not contain DDT, organic tin (TBT), cuprous oxide and other poisons. Such coatings are not only in line with the relevant regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the policies stipulated by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of People’s Republic of China, but also have excellent anti-fouling performance, allowing them to effectively inhibit the adhesion of marine life and ship corrosion. They represent the future of the marine antifouling coatings development.
